Formula 1 Machining – Wire Erosion (Electric Discharge) Machining

The non-contact nature of wire erosion machining makes the wire electrical discharge machining process highly suitable for Formula 1 machining of hardened or difficult-to-machine materials, such as hardened steels, aerospace aluminium or titanium alloys. Combined with 5 axis machining, wire erosion machining is an apt choice for retaining hard-material integrity during the machining of intricate sections of a component, using an electrically charged wire to ‘erode’ the material.

Formula 1 Machining – Spark Erosion (Electrical Discharge) Machining

Traditionally used for tool making and often referred to as die-sink machining, spark erosion is useful for Formula 1 machining – again for the machining of hardened materials or materials which tend to distort under traditional machining methods. Using a die which is ‘sunk into the material’ whilst submerged in dielectric fluid, spark erosion is a non-contact machining process suitable for conductive materials, and is often combined with mill-turn and/or 5 axis machining.
